Mexico City:: Rich Chaos

If you don't like large crowds of people, you may not like Mexico City. However, for someone who loves the chaos, the noise and hectic come-and-gos of a big city (25 million+ in pop.), you'll adore Mexico City.

It's actually quite an interesting place. The living quality varies so much from one district to the next, it's  impossible not to notice. For example, my sister and I visited El Mercado de la Merced, a superbly busy market where you can find local foods, spices, knick-knacks and random things you've never seen before. It's located in an area that is relatively poor - so word of precaution, don't walk around there too long after dark! The day after, we visited an area not too far off from where the market was, Zona Rosa, where Frida Khalo's Casa Azul is located. That area is absolutely lovely, and you can tell almost instantly that it's a relatively rich area.

A few must-see places are the following if you're tight on time:

• The Anthropology museum (this is where you will find the original Aztec Sun Dial, most commonly mistaken to be the Aztec Calendar)
• Friday Khalo's home - unfortunately this was closed when I visited, but I'd definitely go back to see it properly
• Mercado de la Merced 
• Teotihuacan (ruins - word of advice, the view from the Moon Pyramid is much more impressive than the one from the Sun Pyramid - both are relatively easy climbs too!)
• The Tequila Museum (discover real Mezcal if you haven't already - make sure to take it with the worm salt, yes you read right, worm salt)

As for transportation, don't get screwed over by the taxi drivers there. Transportation by subway is the easiest thing. It costs less than 40cents CAD$, goes to all the most popular destinations and is easy to navigate through.
